Shelagh Robinson Mirror Read Blog 33: Turn On Your Neurons!

Electrifying brain-training, and content too, in reverse…

For the electrics to work properly, we need to pass current through wires that are not often live. Then we have to do it again. This is the basis of all brain-training activities: Staying mentally active is about stimulating ourselves into strength.  This doesn’t always come easily. But it becomes easier, if we do it over and over.  Yes, reps.

The challenge is to stay interested enough in the activity to do it regularly.

This is a main criticism of brain-training programs: While activating, and even exciting, memory, movement, and math games can leave players wanting. At the end of a mental workout what have we gained? Just doing tasks faster is not reinforcing enough for everyone. Reducing the ages of our brains is a desirable prospect, but what does this mean in the context of day-to-day life?

I wanted to challenge myself, and I wanted to learn something. That’s why I created Mirror Read Headline News.  Now, I can choose articles according to categories like World or Business or Entertainment, and immediately have access to them – in mirror text.

At the end of my daily 15-minute workout, I’ve read the latest on topics I am genuinely interested in and really turned them over in my head. And, yes, afterwards, I do feel mentally challenged. It’s good.

Because I’ve concentrated: I’ve had to focus, I’ve slowed down.  I felt what it was like to be a new reader again.  And fascinatingly, when I’m finished, properly oriented text feels positively simple, even over-obvious, to me.

In the end, Mirror Read Headline News is like reading a magazine while you ride a stationary bicycle, or watching tv as you run on a treadmill.  Sometimes it’s good to get into the feelings of the muscles and the experience itself.  Sometimes it’s good to distract ourselves so we get fit and hardly notice.

Try out our brain games today and let us know what you think.
